Cooling tower:

A heat rejection device that is used for rejecting the waste heat is known as a cooling tower. It removes the waste heat from the atmosphere by using the cooling of the lower temperature water stream.
Also in the case of closed circuit dry cooling towers, the evaporation of water is very famous for removing the process heat and make cool the working fluid and rely solely on air for cooling the working fluid, nearby the dry-bulb air temperature.

Mainly it is famous for cooling the circulating water used in HVAC systems for cooling buildings, oil refineries, petrochemical and other chemical plants and thermal power stations. It is classified on the bases of type of air induction into the tower. Commonly, it is classified into two types where one is a natural draft cooling tower and the other is induced draft cooling tower.

Working of Cooling Tower:

Its working process is based on the evaporation process. Commonly, in smaller applications like in HVAC systems the forced induction type is used with the cross flow. Where, from top of cooling tower the water is sprayed out, the air is flowing out from the sides of axial flow fans for cooling tower, that is discharged towards the top of the cooling tower. At that time the air that is not inundated with vapor makes contact with the sprayed hot water. This air is converted into latent heat, which results in the reduction in the water temperature to the nearest wet bulb temperature.

Evaporative cooling towers:

Advantages:
  • Low capital cost.
  • Low power consumption.
Disadvantages:
  • Has to be cleaned twice per year.
  • Has to be registered with local authorities.
  • Requires water treatment.
  • Small water loss.

Dry air coolers:

Advantages:
  • Little or no water treatment.
  • Low maintenance.
  • Low power consumption.
  • Moderate capital cost.
  • No water loss.
  • Possible heat reclaim.
Disadvantages:

Will only cool to within 5°C of ambient which in the summer for a few days for short periods will be 30°C or higher.

Refrigerated water chillers:

Advantages:
  • Stable water temperature independent of ambient.
  • Possible heat reclaim.
  • No water loss.
  • Little or no water treatment.
Disadvantages:
  • High running cost.
  • High capital cost.
