Francis turbine Test Rig:

A very famous and widely used type of water turbine is known as Francis turbine. It was developed in Lowell, Massachusetts by James B. Francis. Also, it is known as an inward-flow reaction turbine, that works in a combine manner of radial and axial flow concepts.

These turbines are operated in the water head from 40 to 600 m and used for electrical power production. Commonly, the most of the electric generators use the Francis turbine that has a power output range between a few kilowatts up to 800 MW. It can be minimized by the mini-hydro installations. The diameters of penstock between 3 and 33 feet. Its speed can be lying between 0.91 and 10.06 metres.

Its speed can be ranged from 75 to 1000 RPM. Here on the outer part of turbine's rotating runner the wicket is get around and makes a control on the rate of water flow, with the help of the turbine. This process can be done for different power production rates. It is always mounted with the shaft vertical to isolate the water from the generator. Also here a facility of easy to install and maintain is available here, with this turbine.

Francis turbine Parts:

The main parts of Francis Turbine are:

Casing

Here a completely airtight full of water spiral casing is used to enclose the runner inside it.

Guide mechanism:

The guide mechanism consists of a complete circular wheel around the runner of the turbine. On the guide wheel, there are some stationary guide vanes that are fixed on it. It allows the water to strike these vanes without shock at the inlet. There an alteration can be occurred between the two adjacent vanes. Because of this alters the amount of water that is striking the runner can be varied.

Runner

A runner is a circular wheel on this circular wheel there is a fixed series of Radial Curved Vanes are available. The vanes are shaped in a specific manner so that the water enters and leaves the runner without shock.

Draft tube:

Generally, the exit pressure of the runner turbine should be less then the atmospheric pressure. So at the exit point it is not easy for discharged water to the tail race. Here, for discharging water from the exit of the turbine to the tail race we need a pipe or tube of gradually increasing area, which is known as a Draft Tube. The one end of this tube is connected with the outlet of runner and the other one is sub-merged below the level of water in the tail-race.
