Plate Heat Exchanger Designs:

A device which provides the flow of updraft energy between two or more than twosolutions at the dissimilar temperatures is known as Heat exchangers. There are so many different types of Heat exchangers also the plate heat exchanger is the one from its types.
There are so many different types of Heat exchangers also the plate heat exchanger is the one from its types.
In this type of heat exchanger the metal plates are used for transferring the heat between two fluids. The pressed pattern on each plate surface induces turbulence and minimizes stagnant areas and fouling. It has the advantage that, the solutions are separated to a very large surface area because the solutions is spread out over the plates.

Parts of Plate Heat Exchanger:

  • Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers
  • Welded Plate Heat Exchangers
  • Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers
Controlled Designs of Plate Heat Exchanger:

Thermally Controlled Designs:

If the design go above to the permissible pressure drop for a given thermal duty.More plates be added and pressure drop is reduced by lowering the velocity. Such designs are termed thermally controlled.

Hydraulically Controlled Designs:

If the design pressure drop is then the allowable pressure drop. Few plates are removed and pressure drop is increased by increasing the velocity.Such a design is termed pressure drop controlled. This results in a greater temperature change across the plate than required, or over-dimensioning.
Applications of Plate Heat Exchanger
  • A whole heat exchange network can be condensed to a plate heat exchanger.
  • Also used in food and cosmetics industries.
  • Pasteurization of milk uses the plate heat exchanger with three- four sections.
  • Widely used in dairy and food processing industries.

Advantages:

  • Can be easily cleaned
  • Capacity can be increased
  • Heat transfer efficiency is more
  • Leaking plates can be removed in pairs
  • Maintenance is simple
  • No extra space is required for dismantling
  • Simple and compact in size

Disadvantages:

  • Careful dismantling and assembling
  • Finding leakage is difficult
  • Initial cost is high
  • Joints may be deteriorated
  • Over tightening can result in increased pressure
  • Pressure drop can be caused
  • The parts of the cooling system can be susceptible to corrosion
